Restaurant Insurance in California: Coverage, Costs & Quotes
A restaurant stacks more risk into one building than almost any small business — open flames, employees, customers, food, and often alcohol. Here’s how to build a policy that protects all of it.
Whether you run a full-service restaurant, a café, a pizza shop, a food truck, or a bar, you’re juggling a unique stack of risks: cooking equipment and fire, slip-and-fall exposure from customers, food-borne illness claims, expensive kitchen equipment, employees doing physical work, and — if you serve alcohol — liquor liability. A single general liability policy covers only part of that.
What every restaurant needs
- General liability — customer injuries, slip-and-falls, and food-borne illness claims
- Commercial property — your building, kitchen equipment, furniture, and inventory
- Business owner’s policy (BOP) — bundles liability and property efficiently
- Workers’ compensation — required in California from your first employee
- Liquor liability — if you serve or sell alcohol
- Spoilage / equipment breakdown — when a cooler fails and inventory is lost

Liquor liability — don’t skip it
If your restaurant serves alcohol, general liability usually won’t cover an alcohol-related claim. California has dram-shop-style exposure: if an intoxicated patron causes harm, your business can be drawn into the claim. Liquor liability is the coverage that responds. For bars and restaurants with meaningful alcohol sales, it’s essential, not optional.
Watch the alcohol percentage. Carriers rate restaurants partly on what share of sales comes from alcohol. A family restaurant with 15% alcohol sales is priced very differently from a bar at 90%. We’ll place you with a market that fits your actual mix — our appetite covers everything from no-alcohol cafes to full bars.
Workers’ comp for restaurants
California requires workers’ comp from your first employee — and restaurants use it. Burns, cuts, slips on wet floors, and back strains are common kitchen claims. Rates depend on payroll and the correct class code. Through biBerk and Three we quote restaurant workers’ comp quickly and keep your classification accurate so you don’t overpay.

Property, equipment & spoilage
Your kitchen equipment is expensive and essential. Commercial property coverage protects your ovens, coolers, furniture, and build-out, while equipment-breakdown and spoilage coverage pays when a walk-in cooler fails and takes your inventory with it. For many restaurants, a spoilage claim is more likely than a fire — make sure it’s covered.
Food trucks, cafes & bars
- Food trucks — need commercial auto plus general liability and often equipment coverage for the mobile kitchen
- Cafes & coffee shops — lower risk, but still need GL, property, and workers’ comp
- Bars & taverns — liquor liability is central; assault-and-battery coverage may apply
- Pizza & delivery — delivery adds commercial auto / hired-and-non-owned auto exposure
Cost factors
Restaurant premiums depend on your sales volume, square footage and payroll, alcohol percentage, whether you have deep fryers or open flame, delivery operations, and your claims history. Rather than quote a misleading average, we price your actual operation across multiple carriers and show you the options.
