When you’re shopping for pet insurance, the hard part is that plans look similar on the surface but differ enormously in what they actually cover. Fetch (formerly Petplan) has built a reputation for breadth — bundling into one plan the things many competitors either exclude or charge extra for. We’ve partnered with Fetch for exactly that reason. Here’s an honest look at what you get.

What Fetch covers

Fetch’s core accident-and-illness plan covers a wide range of care, and much of it comes standard rather than as paid add-ons:

  • Accidents & injuries — from broken bones to swallowed objects
  • Illnesses — including cancer, infections, and chronic conditions
  • Every-tooth dental — injury and disease in every adult tooth and the gums
  • Exam fees — the sick-visit exam charges many insurers exclude
  • Breed-specific & hereditary conditions — standard in the base plan
  • Behavioral therapy — reimbursed up to an annual limit
  • Telehealth / 24-7 online vet visits
  • Alternative therapies — acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy under standard coverage

What makes Fetch different: Most of the above is included in the single core plan. With many competitors, features like exam fees, dental disease, or behavioral therapy are add-ons that raise your price — or simply aren’t offered.

The dental coverage that sets Fetch apart

This is Fetch’s standout feature, and it matters more than most pet owners realize. Many pet insurers limit dental coverage to just the four canine teeth, or exclude dental disease entirely. Fetch covers injury and disease in every adult tooth and the gums, including periodontal disease, up to your annual limit.

Why this is a big deal: periodontal (gum) disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats — studies show 80–90% of dogs over age three have some form of it. And a single tooth extraction can cost hundreds to a couple thousand dollars. Full-mouth dental coverage isn’t a fringe perk; it’s coverage for something most pets will actually need.

How reimbursement works

Fetch is a reimbursement plan, which means you can use any licensed vet — no networks to worry about. Here’s the flow:

  • You take your pet to the vet and pay the bill
  • You submit the claim to Fetch
  • Fetch reimburses you up to 90% of covered costs, after your deductible

You choose your reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit when you enroll, which lets you balance monthly premium against out-of-pocket cost. Claims are typically processed in around ten days.

Waiting periods & what to know

In the interest of an honest picture — because no plan is perfect — here are the details worth knowing:

  • Waiting periods: Illness coverage typically has up to a 15-day waiting period, and orthopedic conditions can carry a longer wait. Review your plan documents for specifics.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Like nearly all pet insurers, conditions that existed before coverage generally aren’t covered — though Fetch does cover certain curable pre-existing conditions after a symptom-free period, and offers some support for newly adopted shelter pets.
  • Routine/wellness care (annual exams, vaccines, dental cleanings) isn’t part of the core accident-and-illness plan — it’s available as optional Fetch Wellness coverage.
  • Premiums rise as pets age — normal for the industry, but worth planning for.

The takeaway: enroll while your pet is young and healthy. That’s when premiums are lowest and before anything becomes a “pre-existing” condition — the single biggest factor in getting the most from any pet insurance.
